The Wonderment of Kitchen Design

Nature provides us with daily beauty and here we see this wonderment celebrated through the medium of kitchen design.   Rugged stone veneer provides an insight into the seismic violence that makes up our world while the smooth finished worktop provides an insight into how uneven and harsh surfaces can be perfectly polished by water, time and even human persistence. Add architectural integration, abstract shapes and art to the mix and you have found a kitchen that exists in equilibrium with nature, architecture, design and individual!   Who said kitchen design wasn’t interesting!

Balance!

Kitchen design is a functional art form with the ability to influence the surrounding architecture in a way that can encourage harmony and balance.   Dramatic material choices can help to categorise functional art but it can also alienate the human desire for comfort and practicality. This design is certainly impressive, boasting a futuristic influence upon its regressive and minimal architectural surroundings.   The kitchen is allowed to sprawl out beyond its natural position with an additional line of cabinetry creating a sheltered harbour of functionality for the kitchen.   The free hanging and cantilevered cabinetry also helps to deliver a bold and interesting visual experience. But is it possible that this design has overstepped the mark, becoming art first and kitchen second.   Kitchen design is about creating an aesthetical and artistic impression but it is also about satisfying our pre-programmed desire to be subconsciously soothed within our private livin...

Kitchen - A Design Parasite

In the beginning we created fire; harnessing a seemly uncontrollable element that had the power to transform our primeval diet and stimulate basic sociability.   The pace of kitchen evolution has been driven by a human desire to do things better, quicker and more efficiently, that is why the modern kitchen has become a console of communication built upon a foundation of function.   This concept by Toncelli illustrates the power and influence of modern kitchen design.   If we simply wore clothes there would be no fashion, if we had stayed at home there would be no cars and if the kitchen was just for cooking we wouldn’t have designs like this!   Featuring an impressive interactive, translucent worktop complete with Samsung tablet technology this design redefines kitchen function by fusing cutting edge interactive technology with primary functionality.   The kitchen is evolving into a design parasite, absorbing furniture, technology and architecture ...

FLASH! Superhero Kitchen Design

Okay kitchen design enthusiasts welcome to 2012 and what a great way to start a blisteringly good year of design than to focus your retina on this little beauty from Splinterworks!   This design is opulently dressed in a mix of American black walnut, Californian burr walnut; teak and silver leaf and is a showcase of how deep pockets and a vivid imagination can deliver something really special.   The Mogul’s initial reaction on seeing this design was to think that it was in-fact Flash Gordon’s Art Deco kitchen!   There was also the lingering question about whether or not the addition of a very artistic second island between the cooking zone and the back wall would cause a functional obstruction! Upon further consideration it becomes obvious that the second kitchen island enhances the usability and allows the design to achieve perspective against the expansive architecture!   The slender design and central position of this island creates a natural and unobtrusive fl...
