This design teeters on a counterweighted equilibrium causing the viewer to question if this is kitchen or art!   Functional performance is enhanced through levitation with storage being restricted to an ergonomically efficient hot zone.   Variance of height and depth are used to provide aesthetic interest and contrasting colours and patterns provide an avenue for artistic flair. In order for kitchen design to keep pace with the evolution of human existence we must consider new ideas and innovations.   By rejecting the surrounding architecture as the divine design influencer kitchen designers are free to explore diverse shapes and forms which allow the kitchen to perform its primary functional role but also encourages new interior design and social trends. This kitchen is a play with shapes, a simple combination of forms which helps to maximise functional performance while delivering aesthetic desire in a compressed form.   By Including a book shelf this free standing design even manages to consider how it can replace traditional living room furniture.   It’s reassuring to know that even though our living spaces and kitchens are becoming more compressed designers can still find room for the ever essential wine cooler!!   Cheers!!

Nature provides us with daily beauty and here we see this wonderment celebrated through the medium of kitchen design.   Rugged stone veneer provides an insight into the seismic violence that makes up our world while the smooth finished worktop provides an insight into how uneven and harsh surfaces can be perfectly polished by water, time and even human persistence. Humans like to architecturally compartmentalize, to create intimate spaces for introverted reflection and congregational hot spots for sharing conversation and enjoying each other’s company.   It could be argued that these spaces are socially required to break down the inevitable tensions caused by cohabitation and to provide separation between areas of the home used for different functions at different times of the day. The island stands out as an artistic indulgence with the circular drum acting as a contrasting counter weight to the entire design and providing an interesting platform for culinary and social exchange. Only light is allowed to influence the purity of this design.   The subtle contradiction between linear form and textured finish creates an interesting proposition for any architectural space.   The split level cantilever with unobtrusive supporting element gives the design an edgy feel and allowing this feature to penetrate through the surface material is a real master stroke! It is said that opposites attract and here we see how contemporary kitchen design can become timelessly elegant though the sympathetic use of classically styled architecture.   The quiet respect is mutual with both architecture and kitchen benefiting from the relationship.   The kitchen brings a fresh, youthful energy to the space, delivering the required amount of functional and sensory impact expected of any new kitchen.   The architecture keeps the kitchen upstart in check, keeping the atmosphere grounded and bringing a tried and tested safety to the design.     This type of relationship is blossoming but cannot be reversed as traditional kitchens do not work well with contemporary architecture!   Or maybe we just haven’t seen it done properly yet!? Hmmmmmm!

Kitchen design is a functional art form with the ability to influence the surrounding architecture in a way that can encourage harmony and balance.   Dramatic material choices can help to categorise functional art but it can also alienate the human desire for comfort and practicality. This design is certainly impressive, boasting a futuristic influence upon its regressive and minimal architectural surroundings.   The kitchen is allowed to sprawl out beyond its natural position with an additional line of cabinetry creating a sheltered harbour of functionality for the kitchen.   The free hanging and cantilevered cabinetry also helps to deliver a bold and interesting visual experience.
